SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Eva-Dina Delgado, D-Chicago, released the statement below following the adjournment of the Illinois General Assembly’s special session:

“As everyone’s lives continue to be impacted by the ongoing health crisis, it was critical for the General Assembly to come together to create solutions for the people of Illinois.

“In the midst of a number of issues we face as a state, we prioritized a balanced budget that gives state leaders the flexibility to help families in need while providing increased legislative oversight on spending to make sure our tax dollars are spent wisely in the fight against COVID-19. These tough decisions will help address our most urgent problems, which was a goal of mine coming into this special session.

“As we continue to implement initiatives to tackle the effects the virus has had on our state’s economy, we must continue to provide aid and protection for workers, such as increased benefits for workers who become ill as they return to work and resources for workers who are temporarily unemployed for reasons they had zero control over. We must continue to do what is necessary to rebuild and revamp our state’s economy.

“As the Northeast region of the state continues to be devastated by the virus, affordable and accessible healthcare resources are more important than ever. As schools continue to transition to remote learning, I supported increased support for top of the line educational resources to ensure that teachers are able to give our children the education they deserve while keeping our families safe.

“While progress is being made, there is more work that will need to be done to create a safer and stronger Illinois. I will continue to fight to protect our families, including efforts to ensure affordable housing and a trustworthy, ethical government where decisions are made for best interest of the people of Illinois and not by bad actors with selfish motives.”
