“During these difficult times, providing resources to community members is critical,” Yingling said. “I highly encourage immigrant families who are looking for assistance to contact their local Welcoming Center and get connected to resources that can help ease the burden this pandemic has caused.”
Illinois Immigrant Welcoming Centers partner with the Illinois Department of Human Services and the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights in an effort to help provide various human services to immigrant families. The Welcoming Centers can connect families to SNAP, WIC, TANF and other public benefits, as well as information on COVID-19 testing locations and access to medical resources. During his time in the General Assembly, Yingling has worked to bring resources to support the immigrant community. He was a co-sponsor of the Illinois Trust Act, which prohibits local law enforcement from detaining individuals on behalf of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), among other provisions. Yingling has also hosted events in the district to provide information and resources to the immigrant community, including a Know Your Rights seminar detailing the rights that immigrants have when interacting with the U.S. government.
“COVID-19 and the hardships caused by it affects all people, and we must make sure that no one is forgotten about or underserved during this pandemic,” Yingling continued. “Immigrants are an important part of our community and must have access to relief during this difficult time. I will continue fighting for resources that help immigrants and other residents during this pandemic and beyond.”
