CHICAGO –State Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is promoting the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to support families in need during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

“This unprecedented health crisis has put a lot of Illinoisans out of work, and many families can no longer pay for their utilities,” said Slaughter. “That is why I want to raise awareness about the resources provided through the state’s utility bill assistance to support our families during this difficult time.”

Slaughter is promoting the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to help families impacted by the outbreak. By state order, utility companies have suspended disconnections and late fees. Members in areas served by ComEd can note that ComEd recently announced they would extend this moratorium on disconnections through the end of June. Additionally, the period to apply for LIHEAP funding has been extended until June 30. “Although this resource will help many affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, I recognize there remains a lot of work to be done to provide our families with the resources they need to weather this crisis,” Slaughter said. “No matter the circumstances, every Illinois family is deserving of empathy, support and care.”
