AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, is encouraging local high school students to apply for a spot on the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Student Advisory Council for the 2020-2021 school year.

“Far too often, young people are left out of the conversations with policymakers on decisions that will directly impact their lives,” said Hernandez. “I am pleased to see the Illinois State Board of Education continue their Student Advisory Council, and give students the opportunity to share their unique perspectives and concerns on state education policy.”

The ISBE Student Advisory Council consists of a diverse group of motivated and engaged high school students from across Illinois to share ideas, express concerns and work as student advisors to ISBE policymakers. The council is given the task to create a robust research project and present it for the ISBE board at the end of each term. Illinois public high school students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year this fall may apply, and applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on May 29. For more information or to apply, please visit www.isbe.net/studentvoices.

“The ISBE Student Advisory Council is a great way for the youth in our community to bring their ideas and concerns from their experiences directly to the policymakers,” said Hernandez. “I strongly encourage students with an interest in making a change in our community to take advantage of this opportunity and apply for a spot on the council.”
