CHICAGO – To help students access financial scholarships despite the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, state Rep. Fran Hurley, D-Chicago, is highlighting the Conference of Women Legislators (COWL) of the Illinois General Assembly’s 2020-2021 Scholarship Award Program and is encouraging local women to apply before the deadline next Friday, May 1.

“The COVID-19 health crisis has caused a lot of uncertainty about the future, especially for nontraditional college students who may be worried about their job security or supporting their family during this time, so COWL has extended the deadline to apply for a scholarship,” said Hurley. “I am proud to be a part of the Conference of Women Legislators and through our scholarship program we can help ensure nontraditional female students are able to continue pursuit of their education.”

COWL is a bipartisan, bicameral non-profit organization of women legislators in the Illinois General Assembly.  The scholarship program was created as part of COWL’s mission to promote economic independence, community service and leadership development. Hurley, who serves as Co-Chair of the Scholarship Committee, is encouraging Illinois women, 25 years old and up, who are seeking to earn undergraduate college degrees from an Illinois college to apply. Applications must be postmarked by May 1, 2020 and are available for download at www.COWLIL.com.

“Now more than ever it is critical that we continue to provide opportunities to Illinois’ women, children and families, because the COVID-19 crisis and other issues facing our state are bigger than politics,” continued Hurley. “I encourage local women students wishing to continue their education to apply for the COWL Scholarship Award Program as soon as possible.”
