GLENVIEW, Ill. – With the COVID-19 outbreak impacting every facet of everyday life, state Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, D-Glenview, is reminding residents that affordable legal aid is available to them during these difficult times.

“Navigating the legal system can be stressful under ordinary circumstances, and this crisis has put vulnerable populations at a higher risk of housing insecurity, domestic violence and job loss,” Gong-Gershowitz said. “Having an effective advocate improves outcomes for those most in need, and there are many local resources that can help.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there are a variety of legal aid clinics and community-based organizations aiding individuals with a wide range of issues such as public benefits, housing laws and health care. These resources can be accessed both through the internet and phone and are either low-cost or free. For more information on organizations offering legal aid, please visit http://iejf.org/press-room/newsletters/newsletter-story/legal-aid-hotlines-here-to-help/.

Gong-Gershowitz is continuously working to connect residents with the resources they need during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has put together weekly bulletins focused on different topics such as small business assistance, education help and other resources for the community. She has also compiled a list of COVID-19 related resources available on her website at https://www.gonggershowitz.com/covid-19-resources/.

“No one is immune to the deep-felt impacts of this pandemic, and I want to ensure that any resident who needs help during these difficult times can find it without having to worry about if that legal aid will be the difference between putting food on the table and going without,” Gong-Gershowitz continued. “It’s important that we do this together.”
