Chicago – State Rep. Edgar Gonzalez Jr., D-Chicago, issued the following statement condemning the demolition of the Crawford Coal Plant in Little Village:
“In the midst of a pandemic that has highlighted the current and systemic public health challenges we face in neighborhoods like Little Village, we need to hold corporations working in our communities accountable to their actions. The safety and health of our community is my utmost priority, and should be their utmost priority.”
“That has not been the case with Hilco Redevelopment Partners. The release of pollutants as a result of the implosion at the Crawford Coal Plant displays their continued disregard for the health of over 75,000 people, many with preexisting conditions that renders them highly susceptible to airborne contamination. I condemn Hilco’s actions.”
“My office has submitted an official complaint with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to halt any further demolition plans and to immediately conduct an investigation of the surrounding area. We need environmental justice in Illinois. We need environmental justice in Little Village.”
