Yingling Bans Use of Red Light Cameras

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As part of his committed to increase government accountability, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, voted to pass legislation that will ban the use of red light cameras for over 40% of local units of government in the Chicagoland area.

“It is unacceptable to hear how much money has been collected on the backs of families and seniors by towns who use red lights cameras to make up budget shortfalls,” Yingling said. “Red lights cameras are nothing more than a middle class scam that needs to be stopped.”

Yingling was a vocal supporter of House Bill 322, which will prohibit non-home rule units of local government within Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Madison, McHenry, St. Clair, and Will Counties from using automated traffic law enforcement systems, otherwise known as red light cameras. The Yingling-backed initiative gained momentum after a federal probe revealed a potential corruption allegations surrounding the use of red light cameras. The measure passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support and now heads to the Senate for consideration.

“In light of corruption allegations surrounding the use of this technology, this was the necessary and right thing to do,” Yingling added. “I look forward to continue working with all of my colleagues to do away with burdensome fees placed on the middle class by ensuring we make government more efficient and accountable to taxpayers.”
