SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – In response to Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s budget address on Wednesday, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, issued the following statement:

“Today’s address is a starting point in the process of passing a balanced budget that funds the services our residents need and moves Illinois forward on the path toward financial stability. We must continue to pay down our backlog of bills and meet our pension obligations, but remain committed to providing residents with the resources they rely on.

“It is critical that we work together to ensure the passage of a budget that funds new job training, expands opportunities for early childhood education and allows for a smarter criminal justice system that invests in underserved communities across Illinois. We must also work to secure funding for health care and senior services and provide real tax relief to middle-class families and homeowners.

“While there are tough decisions ahead of us, I am committed to working with the governor and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass a bipartisan, balanced budget that reflects on our commitment to build a stronger Illinois.”
