SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Rita Mayfield, D-Waukegan, released the following statement in response to Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s State of the State address on Wednesday:

“Last year, we made progress toward building a stronger Illinois that better invests in job training, works to lower the costs of health care and aims to reduce property taxes. However, there is still more work to be done.

“We have to focus on passing a bipartisan, balanced budget that invests in critical services such as breast cancer screenings, domestic violence shelters and affordable housing. We can renew our commitment to our schools through investment in our teachers, and by encouraging the growth of job training programs designed to prepare workers for high-wage jobs.

“In addition to tackling property tax relief and working to make health care and prescription drugs more affordable, we have to address recent attempts from bad actors looking to game our democratic system for personal gain. Addressing rules regulating the behavior of lobbyists and elected officials will be a priority in efforts to restore confidence in our government.

“I’m committed to addressing the priorities of the residents I have the privilege of serving. We must continue to work together to create a brighter future for a state and community that deserves to thrive.”
