DES PLAINES, Ill – Concerned about the safety of pedestrians, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, and state Sen. Laura Murphy, D-Des Plaines, are calling for new and more comprehensive safety measures on Touhy Ave.

“With all of the incidents at this location, it is time to look at implementing new strategies to deal with the issue,” Moylan said. “We can’t risk anymore lives, this needs to be a priority.”

On Tuesday morning, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle as he exited a bus on the south side of Touhy Ave. near Wolf Road. The man was injured, taken to the hospital and is now in stable condition.

“This man is lucky to have come away with his life,” Murphy said. “Touhy Ave. is clearly a hazard for people trying to cross. It’s time to make changes for the safety of our pedestrians.”

Two nearby fatal accidents involved employees of LSG Sky Chefs, located across from the Pace Suburban Bus stop on Touhy Ave. LSG Sky Chefs employees who take the bus have to cross several lanes of traffic in order to get to work. The company has implemented a shuttle system in an attempt to eliminate the risk for their employees.

Both Legislators are urging the Illinois Department of Transportation and Pace to swiftly implement changes such as installing better lighting, lowering speed limits, moving the bus stop to a safer location or some other measure to prevent further accidents.
