GURNEE, Ill. – With the winter season steadily approaching, state Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, is reminding area residents to prepare their cars for the colder temperatures with winter survival kits.

“Winter can be an exciting time of the year, but it is very important to prepare for the worst with the harsh winter weather on its way,” Mason said. “Keeping items like a flashlight, batteries, a blanket, nonperishable snacks, water, gloves, boots and a first aid kit in your car can help keep you safe and healthy during a car emergency.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) estimates that 17% of all vehicle crashes happen in winter conditions. In IDOT’s long-standing campaign for driver safety called “Winter Weather – Get it Together,” IDOT recommends wearing a seatbelt, avoiding cruise control and maintaining slower speeds to stay safe and prevent collisions while traveling.

“Please remember to drive defensively, and check your route’s weather forecast before traveling,” Mason said. “Keeping these safety tips in mind will not only keep you safe, but it will keep everyone on the road safe this winter. Every person has a part to play in keeping the community safe.”
