GURNEE, Ill. – State Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, met with a troop of Girl Scouts to discuss her time as a legislator and the importance of civic engagement at the Church of Saint Patrick in Wadsworth on Monday.

“Girl Scouts is an incredible organization that does so much for our community and the young people in it. I grew up in Girl Scouts, and I still appreciate and utilize many of the life skills I learned as a Girl Scout today,” Mason said. “It’s inspiring to see our students taking the initiative to understand government and the rights of being a citizen. I’m encouraged by the enthusiasm these Scouts have shown for civic engagement, and I feel honored for the opportunity to speak about such important topics with some of our next generation of leaders.”

Mason spoke to the Girl Scouts about her transition from being a teacher to serving in elected office. Mason also taught the troop about how a bill becomes a law in Illinois and the ways residents can have a direct impact on legislation.
