BATAVIA, Ill. –Continuing her efforts to promote public safety in the community, state Rep. Karina Villa, D-West Chicago, is highlighting December as Impaired Driving Prevention Month.

“Drunk and otherwise impaired driving is extremely dangerous, not only for the driver and their passengers, but also for other people out on the road,” said Villa. “During the winter season with poor road conditions, accidents and other car problems are more likely to happen, so it is important to be safe and responsible this holiday season. If you are not in good condition to get behind the wheel of a car don’t try to drive home.”

Impaired driving has taken an enormous toll on American lives. In a recent report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that, in 2017, over 10,000 lives were lost in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes alone. The same report shows alcohol-related crashes making up almost 30% of all traffic fatalities; 100% of which are preventable.

“Impaired driving is not only dangerous, but it is also a crime. Causing an accident or being arrested is not worth it,” continued Villa. “If we commit to ending impaired driving, we can save lives. I will continue working to keep our families and community safe.”
