BATAVIA, Ill. – As the holiday shopping season begins and with the recent recognition of Small Business Saturday, state Rep. Karina Villa, D-West Chicago, is highlighting the importance of shopping small and supporting local businesses in the community.

“As the daughter of local small business owners, I understand firsthand the meaningful influence small businesses have on our community,” said Villa.  “Shopping locally helps keep our community unique, and supporting local businesses translates to a direct investment back into our economy, so it is important to support the small business owners right here in our local neighborhoods.”

Saturday, Nov. 30 marked the 10th Annual Small Business Saturday, which was created to help small businesses compete with large retailers between the busy shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Villa is encouraging residents to shop locally at small businesses this holiday season, as they offer unique goods for gifts, jobs for local residents, and support to local charities and organizations.

During her time as state representative, Villa has continually worked to support small and medium-sized businesses owners, and passed a major package of new laws aimed at attracting new businesses to the state and growing Illinois’ economy, including elimination of the franchise tax, tax credits for businesses that create new jobs and a tax credit for businesses with apprenticeship programs.

“I am committed to building a stronger Illinois and growing our middle class, but we can do more by shopping locally and growing our local economy,” continued Villa. “I encourage local residents to consider shopping small not just during this holiday season but throughout the year.”
