Villa Stands Up for Working Families Post Janus

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Karina Villa, D-West Chicago, recently supported new legislation to protect the privacy of Illinois workers in response to the United States Supreme Court ruling on Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 31.

“As a former member of the Illinois Education Association, I understand the importance of workers’ rights to organize and form unions,” said Villa. “We have unions to thank for 8 hour work days, weekends and countless other privileges that many of us take for granted. Organized labor has deep roots here in the Midwest, and has been a proven path to the middle class.”

Villa supported Senate Bill 1784, which recently passed out of the General Assembly with bipartisan support. The measure will protect worker privacy by making employee personal information exempt from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), and is supported by a wide coalition of labor organizations including the AFL-CIO, AFSCME, SEIU, IFT, IEA, INA, LiUNA!, UFCW Local 881, IBEW Local 51. Villa is committed to standing up for workers, and will continue advocating for policies that create good-paying jobs and build a stronger Illinois.
