DES PLAINES, Ill – Continuing his firm support of local businesses and small business owners, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plains, is encouraging residents to participate in Small Business Saturday on Nov. 30.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy, and they are especially vital to our area,” Moylan said. “I urge everyone to go out Nov. 30 and patronize the small businesses of our community.”

Created to help small businesses compete with large retailers between the busy shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday celebrates local businesses that create jobs and keep money within the local economy. Thanksgiving weekend is the biggest retail shopping weekend of the year in the United States. Last year an estimated 47.4 million people shopped on Small Business Saturday and spent billions of dollars, topped only by Black Friday, according to the National Retail Federation.

“By shopping local, you may be able to find unique items that big box stores and other corporate retailers cannot provide,” Moylan said. “Participating in Small Business Saturday helps our local economy, which benefits our neighbors and those who choose to call our community home.”
