CHICAGO – As cold temperatures hit the region, state Rep. Celina Villanueva, D-Chicago, is encouraging residents in need to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a winter heating assistance program that helps families pay for utility services.
“With the winter months quickly approaching, it is important that many families know about vital programs like LIHEAP that can help offset high utility bills and help keep families warm this winter.” Villanueva said. “No family should be forced to choose between providing food for their family and keeping their heat on. The LIHEAP program offers assistance to many families in Chicago and surrounding communities during the tough winter months.”
LIHEAP assists eligible families by helping to subsidize winter heating bills in Illinois. The 2019-2020 application period is currently open, and applications are accepted until funding is exhausted. Villanueva is encouraging area residents in need of home heating assistance to visit LIHEAPIllinois.com or to call the state’s toll-free LIHEAP hotline at 877-411-WARM (877-411-9276) for information on income eligibility and how to apply for assistance.
“If you or any families you know are struggling to pay high utility bills, I would highly recommend to apply for the LIHEAP program to help keep warm this winter,” Villanueva said. “Especially during the tough winter months we have in Chicago, we must continue to support struggling families and neighbors in our community to help them stay warm and remain safe.”
