HILLSIDE, Ill. – State Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch, D-Hillside, spoke to students at Proviso East recently to highlight the importance of civic engagement and how young people can create positive change in their community.
“The future of our community and state will rely on the young leaders of tomorrow,” Welch said. “I always enjoy visiting with young people and explaining to them how our government functions and the importance of getting involved and creating the change in the world that they want to see.”
Welch was joined by Olesia Boichuk, who is currently completing a fellowship in Rep. Welch’s office through the U.S. Department of State’s Professional Fellows Program. Olesia is a lawyer for the Center of Legal Samopomich Union Faction at the Parliament of Ukraine. She spoke with students about her life in Ukraine and how their civic system differs from that in the United States.
