RED BUD, Ill. – Local jobseekers are encouraged by state Rep. Nathan Reitz, D-Steeleville, to apply to the Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) Snowbird program, a seasonal employment opportunity to perform emergency removal and control of snow and ice on area roads during the winter months.

“As the colder months approach and we continue to experience winter weather conditions, the risk of dangerous road conditions is high,” said Reitz. “IDOT is in need of snowbirds to help keep our roads and highways clear and safe throughout winter. This is very important in our region considering our system of local highways and the large number of residents that commute from rural areas for work.”

Two types of temporary positions are hired for IDOT’s Winter Seasonal Program, which usually occurs from October 16th through April 15th of each year.

Winter Salaried Highway Maintainers (Monthly Snowbirds) perform all of the same job duties as IDOT’s year-round highway maintainers, including performing a variety of tasks related to the maintenance, repair and upkeep of roads, bridges and other related structures and features. Winter Salaried Highway Maintainers (Monthly Snowbirds) must have a Class A or B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with an X or N endorsement.

Snow Removal Operators (Hourly Snowbirds) are paid hourly and respond to emergency weather situations to inspect roadways, operate snow plows and salt spreaders, and remove other hazardous materials and obstacles from the roadways. Snow Removal Operators (Hourly Snowbirds) must also have a Class A or B CDL with an X or N endorsement.

“IDOT does a great job of keeping our roadways clear and safe when winter weather conditions hit our region,” continued Reitz. “I encourage local jobseekers to apply to this program, as not only is this an excellent job opportunity, but it is also a way to give back to our community by making sure our roadways are safe for drivers in the upcoming months.”
