GURNEE, Ill. – State Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, attended the dedication and memorial ceremony to designate a portion of Interstate 94 in honor of fallen Illinois State Police Trooper Gerald Ellis in Green Oaks on Monday. The dedication comes following Mason’s passage of her legislation naming the stretch of Interstate 94 between mile markers 16.5 and 17 as Trooper Gerald W. Ellis Memorial Highway.

“We are unspeakably grateful for Trooper Ellis and his service to the people of Illinois,” said Mason. “Trooper Ellis’s actions are those of a hero. In a heartbeat, he gave everything so that others could live that day. His light will continue to shine on through Stacy, Kaylee, Zoe and generations to come.  And now every single person who drives this road will know his name, and will remember his life, his bravery and his sacrifice for generations to come.”

Trooper Ellis was on duty in his squad car when he was killed by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 94 on March 30 of this year. Trooper Ellis resided in Antioch and is survived by his wife and two daughters.
