LOMBARD, Ill. – To help local seniors protect themselves from scammers, state Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, recently partnered with Lombard Trustee and police officer Reid Foltyniewicz and Andrew Love, from DuPage County Adult Protective Services, to host a senior fraud prevention seminar at the Beacon Hill senior community.
“As state Representative, I’ve made it a priority to pass legislation that will protect our seniors from fraud and deceptive business practices,” said Costa Howard. “It’s a sad fact that many scammers specifically target older people. By teaching seniors how to recognize common scams, we can help them protect themselves from falling prey to identity thieves and other fraudsters.”
In one of her first legislative achievements, Costa Howard passed a new law that will give senior consumers a longer window to review home repair contracts, making sure they have time to consult with family, friends, or legal advisors if they suspect they have been coerced into a fraudulent deal.
