CHICAGO, Ill. – State Rep. Jaime Andrade, D-Chicago, is congratulating residents of Irving Park and the Chicago Housing Authority on the successful opening of the Independence Apartments. The housing development, which features 100% affordable housing for seniors, was codeveloped with the new home of the Independence Park Branch Library.

“When a fire burned down the original branch library in 2015, this neighborhood was without a public library for the first time in over a century,” said Andrade. “Thanks to hard work by members of the community and the city of Chicago, not only does Irving Park have a beautiful library building, but we also have new high-quality affordable housing for area seniors. That is an absolute win for the community.”

Andrade has been a major proponent for increased investment in the Independence Branch Library since he took office. When the city announced plans to rebuild the branch in 2016, Andrade teamed up with local alderpersons to advocate for a plan that included an expanded building and a larger community component. With the opening of the Independence Apartments, that mission is complete.

“Because of the forward-thinking plan developed by the city and their partners, the Independence Branch Library is one of the most forward-thinking institutions in the city with a community center, an educational resource, and quality affordable housing all in one place,” said Andrade. “I hope this project continues to serve the local community for years to come as a place to gather and learn.”
