CHICAGO – As cold and flu season are quickly approaching, state Rep. Fran Hurley, D-Chicago, is partnering with 19th Ward Alderman Matt O’Shea, state Sen. Bill Cunningham, D-Chicago, and the Chicago Department of Public Health to host a free flu shot clinic.
“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, millions of Americans contract the flu each year, with tens of thousands being hospitalized,” said Hurley. “Flu season begins in October, and the best way to protect yourself from the flu and the potentially dangerous complications that come with it is making sure you get your flu shot every year.”
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus, and can cause mild to severe illness. The most serious cases can result in hospitalization or even death in extreme cases. Senior citizens, children and those with serious health conditions are at a high risk of serious flu complications. Hurley is encouraging local residents to stop by her flu shot clinic to receive a free flu shot, as vaccines will be offered at no cost to children over six months old and adults of any age.
