SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, is pleased to announce the enactment of her legislation extending protections for seniors who sign construction contracts with predatory door-to-door salesmen.

“When severe weather hits our community, predatory door-to-door salesmen use it as an opportunity to strongarm seniors into signing unnecessary, unfair construction contracts,” said Mason. “Under previous law, seniors were only given a brief, three-day window to cancel one of these contracts.”

Mason’s measure increases the number of days during which a senior may cancel an unfair contract signed at his or her own home from three days to 15 days. Mason’s House Bill 2643 goes into effect January 1, 2020. For additional information, please contact Mason’s constituent service office by calling 847-485-9986 or emailing info@repjoycemason.com.

“It is heartbreaking that these salesmen take advantage of seniors in the safety of their own homes,” said Mason. “Seniors should have ample time to get out of unfair contracts, and this legislation finally gives them the time to do so.”
