WAUKEGAN, Ill. – State Rep. Rita Mayfield, D-Waukegan, will push for property tax relief for suburban families as a member of the newly-formed Property Tax Task Force.
“Homeowners in our community have had to carry the load of heavy property taxes, and it is slowing down economic growth,” Mayfield said. “While on this task force, I will continue my ongoing efforts to ease the property tax burden on all the homeowners I represent. It’s time to address this problem head-on, and pave the way for a stronger Illinois.”
Mayfield voted to form the Property Tax Relief Task Force, by passing Senate Bill 1932. The bill was recently signed into law by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, and Mayfield was appointed to serve the task force, which is comprised of legislators of both parties and other leaders across the state. Within 90 days, the task force will produce a report outlining policy solutions for implementing property tax relief for homeowners. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Illinois currently has the second highest property tax rate in the country.
“The middle class has had to deal with towering property taxes for too long,” Mayfield said. “We are here to end the era of crushing taxes that are holding that are holding our communities back. We have a lot of work to do before the system is fixed, and this is an important first step.”
