DES PLAINES, Ill. – Continuing his efforts to help seniors ease the burden of skyrocketing property taxes, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is reminding seniors it is not too late to file for their senior exemptions or freezes.
“We have specific exemptions and freezes aiming to protect seniors on fixed incomes from increasing property taxes,” said Moylan. “But in order to receive the proper exemptions or freezes, they need to reapply for them every year. It is not too late this year, and I encourage all senior homeowners to file for the appropriate discounts as soon as possible.”
Cook County Treasurer Mara Pappas recently estimated 26,500 homeowners who received a senior exemption last year did not have the discount applied to their bills for this year. Additionally, over 19,000 of those seniors also received a senior freeze discount last year that was not applied to their tax bills this year either.
Moylan is encouraging any seniors who might be concerned they did not receive their senior exemption or senior freeze to go to cookcountytreasurer.com, and click on the link labeled “Your Property Tax Overview.” There, they should enter their address or property index number to check if they received the appropriate discounts. If they did not, they can do so while on the website by clicking the label “Apply for a missing exemption.” Moylan asks if anyone needs help with the process, they can contact his district office.
“It is very important that we do all that we do what we can to help those who are eligible for property tax relief discounts receive them,” said Moylan. “Most of these seniors are on fixed incomes and can’t afford to pay more in their taxes, especially since they shouldn’t have to.”
Property taxes are due Aug. 1, but seniors who have the benefits applied late will see those discounts on the first installment of next year’s bill.
