Edly-Allen Measure Establishing Long-Term Property Tax Relief Signed into Law

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Legislation sponsored by state Rep. Mary Edly-Allen, D-Libertyville, to lower the property tax burden placed on Lake County families through annual cost-saving rebates was signed into law last week by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

“Lake County homeowners are plagued with some of the highest property taxes in the country, so it was clear more needed to be done to help ease that burden,” Edly-Allen said. “These newly-established annual rebates are a critical first step in answering homeowners’ calls for meaningful property tax relief.”

Edly-Allen helped lead the charge on Senate Bill 39, which establishes the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund. Through the newly established fund, homeowners receiving a general homestead exemption will be eligible to qualify for an annual cost-saving rebate on their property tax bill.  Under the Edly-Allen-backed measure, rebate amounts would be determined based on the amount of money available in the fund and the number of general homestead exemptions awarded in the state.

“More must be done to help ease the burden placed on homeowners throughout our state and I remain committed to helping usher in the necessary reforms,” Edly-Allen added. “From working to make government more efficient by reducing duplicative layers, to holding elected officials accountable, I will continue to work to pass the reforms necessary to build a stronger Illinois and put on our state back on track.”
