SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Jonathan Carroll, D-Northbrook, passed legislation that would ease the property tax burden on Illinois homeowner by providing an annual property tax relief credit through the new Property Tax Relief Fund.

“Property taxes are skyrocketing across our area, and hardworking homeowners are bearing the brunt of the impact,” Carroll said. “I pledged to build a stronger Illinois, and providing property tax relief is a critical part of that. My bill will eventually offer rebates to homeowners to offset their taxes.”

Carroll passed Senate Bill 39, which establishes the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund to provide annual property tax rebates on homeowners’ bills. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Illinois currently has the second highest property tax rate in the country. The median value of a home in Illinois is $179,000, which Illinois taxes at a whopping $4,151 every year. Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the bill into law last week, helping fulfill Carroll’s goal of real property tax relief for local residents.

Included in his efforts to target sky-high property taxes, Carroll is fighting for the passage of Senate Bill 1932. This bill would create the Property Tax Relief Task Force, where both Republicans and Democrats would be appointed to the task force, with no compensation, to identify potential legislative policies that deliver more property tax relief, like government consolidation and cracking down on politicians who double-dipping on taxpayer-funded salaries. Senate Bill 1932 awaits final approval from the governor.

“Easing the burden on property taxes should be a no-brainer, and I am glad the Governor is joining this fight so Illinois can stop forcing people out of their homes and moving away,” Carroll said. “Taxpayers deserve a break from unnecessary financial hardships, and they are going to get it.”
