DES PLAINES, Ill. – Seniors would have the ability to cancel a contract for unwanted, unsolicited home construction work 15 days after signing a contract under a bill pushed by state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines.

“It’s easy for someone to go door to door and push seniors to sign contracts for services someone may not need nor want,” Moylan said. “This measure would give seniors the opportunity to reconsider and cancel their contract if necessary.”

Under the Moylan-supported House Bill 2643, residents 65 years old and older would have the ability to cancel a home repair or remodeling services contract from an uninvited solicitor within 15 days. This would expand upon current law which gives senior homeowners three days to cancel. The act would apply to work on a residence including porch construction, installation of a swimming pool and driveway improvements. It does not apply to landscaping or appliance installation.

House Bill 2643 passed with bipartisan support and has been sent to the governor for approval.

“We need to focus on consumer protection and be ready to adjust to strategies from individuals who target seniors and may want to take advantage of someone’s confusion to make a quick buck,” Moylan said. “This proposal will be helpful to residents across our state.”
