DES PLAINES, Ill. – With Fourth of July celebrations right around the corner, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is encouraging residents to use caution if they find themselves near fireworks this week and to review safety precautions set out from the U.S Fire Administration.

“The Fourth July is a special time of the summer where we all enjoy parades, barbecues and spending time with family and friends,” said Moylan. “While we should keep fireworks to the professionals, please be careful this summer and review safety warnings and procedures if you find yourself near fireworks.”

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, there is usually a spike in emergency room visits and injuries this time during the summer and on average 180 people go to the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the Independence Day holiday.

“Fireworks can be very dangerous, especially to small children. No one wants to ruin an Independence Day celebration with an injury or having to go to the hospital,” said Moylan. “If you would like to enjoy a great firework show, grab a blanket and find a good patch of lawn to watch the fireworks provided by some of the local municipalities and leave the fireworks to the professionals.”
