DES PLAINES, Ill. – Continuing his efforts to provide tax relief to working and middle-class families, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, sponsored legislation to create an Illinois Property Tax Rebate system.

“As property taxes continue to skyrocket, we need to do everything we can to help ease the tax burden on working and middle-class families,” said Moylan. “We need to start looking at new ways we can help local residents save money on property taxes.”

The Moylan-sponsored Senate Bill 39 would establish a property tax relief program, which would allocate property tax rebates to homeowners claiming a general homestead exemption via the newly created Property Tax Relief Fund.

Starting for Fiscal year 2021, every county assessor would have to certify the number of homestead exemptions granted in their county to the Comptroller’s office. The Comptroller’s office would then calculate the rebate amount by dividing the amount appropriated from the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund by the number of general homestead exemptions awarded in the state. Every taxpayer would receive the same rebate amount, and the amount of money distributed to each county would be based on the number of homestead exemptions awarded by the county. The rebate amount would be stated as an additional line on each property tax bill.

“This is yet another good step we took this past session to help relieve some of the tax burden that families are facing in Illinois,” said Moylan. “Every little bit helps and we must continue to find ways to lower property taxes on working and middle class families while protecting critical services that our most vulnerable residents depend on.”
