SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Mike Halpin, D-Rock Island, released the following statement after passing the Fair Tax amendment, a critical first step to providing tax relief to middle-class Illinoisans while raising money to rebuild Illinois’ education system, fund new jobs programs and lower property taxes for Quad City families.
“The Fair Tax means relief from a tax system that, for years, has put too much of a burden on middle-class families. Illinois’ tax structure has been among the most unfair in the country, forcing people who have less to pay more, and forcing our schools and local governments to hike property taxes while millionaires and billionaires fail to pay their fair share. It’s time for that to end.
“While there is more work to be done, this is a first step toward tax relief for 99% of people in the Quad City area. The Fair Tax is also critical to funding affordable health care, bolstering our education system with new teachers and programs to pay for job training and economic opportunities across the state. Passing the Fair Tax will help us build a stronger Illinois now and for years to come, and I am giving it my full support.”
