SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Northlake, issued a statement after voting to pass a Fair Tax amendment, the first step toward much-needed tax relief for 99.5 percent of local taxpayers in the 77th District:

“Illinois has one of the most regressive income tax structures in the nation, which unfairly burdens middle-class families. Middle-income earners pay 13% of their income to state and local taxes while the wealthy in Illinois’ pay half that amount. This has to stop.

“That is exactly why I supported the Fair Tax amendment, which is a critical first step toward making the wealthy pay their fair share and providing tax relief for 99.5% of my local residents. The plan would ask millionaires and billionaires to pay a little more to help Illinois generate more than $3 billion in new revenue which will be used to help stabilize Illinois’ finances, and help make increased investments toward senior services, health care and education at all levels. There is more work to be done—including property tax relief for those who need it most—and I’ll continue to put the middle class first.”
