SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, released the following statement Monday following a House vote on the Fair Tax amendment:
“As a local small business owner, I understand how important it is to grow our economy and strengthen our middle class. Right now, middle-class families in our communities bear an unfair share of the burden under Illinois’ flat tax. That’s a problem for individual families and for our local economy as a whole.
“We’ve heard all the partisan spin about this amendment – both overly optimistic projections and wildly overheated dire rhetoric. When you cut through the commentary, the truth is that the Fair Tax is an opportunity to provide modest tax relief for working people in our community, and we should take that first step.
“We still have a lot of work ahead of us. As we move forward, I am going to continue to take thoughtful steps to build a stronger middle class – by bringing fairness to our tax system, balancing our state budgets, investing in a growing economy, and helping to create lasting prosperity for all of us who live here in Illinois.
