SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Continuing his efforts to cut wasteful spending, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, has sponsored legislation in the Illinois House to give voters the opportunity to decide to consolidate local units of government.

“We need to continue to cut through the red tape and throw out wasteful expenses that are costing taxpayers thousands of dollars,” said Moylan. “There are way too many over-lapping levels of government that provide similar services, it becomes a waste.”

House Bill 307, which Moylan is fully-backing, would create the Citizens Empowerment Act. This legislation would allow voters to vote during the next election on a proposal to dissolve or consolidate units of local government. Moylan has sponsored legislation in the past to consolidate local townships and township highway departments in efforts to save residents thousands on their property taxes.

“We don’t need multiple layers of government providing the same exact services at a heavy cost to our taxpayers,” said Moylan. “When I am going door-to-door, this is one of the top issues I hear daily. Our property taxes continue to increase each year, and this legislation would give us a break and help alleviate some of that property tax burden.”
