SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Recognizing the sacrifices of military families as well as those in uniform, state Rep. Mark Walker, D-Arlington Heights, is pushing to include the spouses and dependents of veterans and military personnel in receiving discounts on goods and services.
“It’s right that we honor and thank our active duty troops and our veterans, but it’s equally important that we remember and honor the sacrifices their families make,” Walker said. “Ensuring that they are able to take advantage of these deserving benefits is one way we can give back to those who have given so much.”
Walker is supporting Senate Bill 1468, which would expand the Veterans’ and Military Discount Program to include the spouse and dependents of Illinois veterans and military personnel who have been issued valid Military ID or Military Dependent ID cards. The Veterans’ and Military Discount Program is a program in which businesses can voluntarily participate in to offer military personnel discounts on their purchases.
“Military spouses and children have unique needs which can and should be addressed by our state,” Walker said. “As a veteran, I understand the pride and worry family members of our men and women in uniform can feel every day. Allowing for the expansion of these benefits is one way we as a state can show our appreciation.”
