BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. – To help constituents protect themselves against identity theft, state Rep. Daniel Didech, D-Buffalo Grove, will be partnering with the Vernon Hills Park District, Village of Vernon Hills, Vernon Township, Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO), ComEd, Advanced Disposal and Hawthorn Mall for a Recycle-O-Rama and Shred Day. The event will take place in the former Sears parking lot at Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills on May 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
“Shredding documents with sensitive personal information should be part of every resident’s strategy to avoid identity theft,” said Didech. “I encourage residents to use this free event to shred old bank statements, medical records and other sensitive documents that contain personal information.”
The event will be free and open to the public. Residents can bring up to two boxes of materials to be shredded per vehicle and shredding will be accepted until the shred truck reaches capacity. Those who bring documents will be able to watch the documents be shredded onsite to confirm their information is safe. Didech’s event is open to residential shredding only. Commercial shredding and chemical waste will not be accepted. In addition to free paper shredding, residents are also invited to bring electronics, textiles, shoes, eyeglasses and hearing aids for recycling.
“With identity theft on the rise, taking steps to keep personal information is more important than ever before,” Didech continued. “This event offers local families an opportunity to do some spring cleaning, while also keeping their confidential information safe.”
