CHICAGO – State Rep. Sonya M. Harper, D-Chicago, is partnering with 4th Ward Alderman Sophia King to offer residents free document shredding and electronic device recycling at her Shred-A-Thon on Saturday, May 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the Dearborn & Polk intersection.

“A Shred-A-Thon is an opportunity for community members to responsibly and safely dispose of old, sensitive documents,” Harper said. “And this Shred-A-Thon will also give residents the ability to safely recycle electronics.”

Residents are encouraged to bring documents like credit card applications, old bank statements, outdated medical records, and unneeded past tax returns. Community members are asked to remove paper clips, staples, or any other bindings. Electronic devices such as monitors, printers, televisions and other devices that garbage collection teams will often refuse to pick up can also be brought to the event for free recycling. For more information, residents are encouraged to contact the constituent service office of 4th Ward Alderman Sophia King at 773-536-8103.

“This Shred-A-Thon is a way for residents to fight identity theft by safely and securely destroying old documents or simply getting rid of unneeded old paperwork,” added Harper. “I encourage all residents of the 4th Ward to take advantage of this opportunity as part of broader community and personal spring cleaning efforts.”
