SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, is standing up to Donald Trump’s extreme attacks on our health care by supporting legislation that will protect care for individuals with pre-existing conditions.

“We are facing yet another Donald Trump policy slashing health care from vulnerable citizens; this time it is people who have been diagnosed with serious illinesses who are under attack,” Hernandez said. “This president is intent on denying coverage to the people who need it the most. If his policies continue unopposed, only healthy people will be able to afford doctors.”

Hernandez is supporting Senate Bill 2026, which prevents Illinois from applying for waivers the Trump administration is pushing to undermine patient protections. The state would not be able to enter into waivers that would eliminate protections for indivudlas with pre-existing conditions without explicit approval of the General Assembly.

“The president is playing politics with people’s health to score cheap points with his base,” Hernandez said. “We will not allow something so shameful and potentially destructive to be inflicted on our communities. Health care is a basic human right, and we intend to defend that right for Illinoisans across the state.”
