SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, is sponsoring a measure to enhance penalties on scammers and other criminals that prey upon seniors.

“Unfortunately, many scam artists and identity thieves specifically target senior citizens, so I am working to protect seniors by enacting harsher penalties for these criminals,” said Costa Howard. “Predatory schemes that target seniors can cause immense personal and financial distress.  Seniors deserve to have the law fully on their side if they fall victim to identity fraud or other crimes.”

Costa Howard is sponsoring Senate Bill 69, which will strengthen repercussions for perpetrators who commit certain crimes against seniors and individuals with disabilities, including criminal abuse and neglect, financial exploitation and identity theft. The measure has received support from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and passed out of the Illinois Senate with vast bipartisan support.

“I have spent my career as a legal advocate for our most vulnerable residents, including seniors,” continued Costa Howard.  “I will continue working to make sure that we protect our seniors and punish criminals who target their vulnerability, to the fullest extent of the law.”
