SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, is encouraging local women to apply for the Conference of Women Legislators (COWL) of the Illinois General Assembly’s 2019-2020 Scholarship Award Program for women college students who are over 25 years old.
“I am proud to join COWL’s bipartisan efforts to make Illinois better for women, children, and families through advocacy and legislation,” said Costa Howard. “We understand that many young women are forced to put their educations on hold, for financial or personal reasons. This scholarship program helps these women to go back to school and earn their undergraduate degrees.”
COWL, a bipartisan, bicameral non-profit organization of Illinois women legislators, created the scholarship program as part of its mission to promote economic independence, community service, and leadership development.
Scholarship applicants are required to enroll in an Illinois-accredited college or university for a minimum of six credit hours to qualify, making the $2,500 scholarships available to part-time and online students. Applications must be postmarked by April 30, 2019. Awardees will be notified by May 31, 2019. Application materials are available at www.cowlil.com.
“A college education opens doors to new, productive careers that empower women and make it possible for them to prosper and support their families,” Costa Howard said. “This scholarship helps to alleviate some of the financial burden that can keep would-be students from going back to school. If you are a woman over 25 years old who is in college, or if you’ve been thinking about going back to school, I encourage you to apply for the COWL Scholarship Award Program as soon as possible!”
