Connor Combats Spread of Untraceable, Undetectable Guns

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Criminals making, carrying or distributing untraceable or undetectable firearms would face stricter penalties under a bill backed by state Rep. John Connor, D-Lockport.

“Guns that can’t be detected with a metal detector represent a unique threat to public spaces where metal detectors are used to identify threats to safety,” Connor said. “If we do not put new laws in place, this danger will take a toll.”

Connor is sponsoring the Undetectable and Untraceable Firearms Act, which creates new laws outlawing the manufacture or possession of guns which are untraceable or undetectable by metal detectors or other safety systems. Under the act, it is also illegal to create or transfer downloadable computer blueprints for creating a firearm without a federal license, and illegal to own untraceable or undetectable gun parts without a Firearms Owner Identification Card.                                                                     

“The ability to produce a gun that can easily pass through a metal detector undetected into a concert, a professional sporting event or a courthouse, creates a new danger in these spaces that previously was deterred by metal detectors,” Connor said. “This has no effect on normal gun owners who have no interest in smuggling an undetectable gun into a protected space.”
