AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, will listen to residents’ opinions on efforts to legalize adult recreational cannabis at a hosting a town hall discussion on Saturday, March 23 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Waubonsee Community College.
“As Governor Pritzker touts cannabis legalization as a way to generate more revenue for the state, there are still several details that lawmakers need to work out in terms of what the final legislation will look like,” said Kifowit. “I want to make sure local voices are part of this process, and have a say on issues such as what would happen to people who are currently incarcerated for marijuana-related crimes if it were to become legal.”
Kifowit and state Sen. Linda Holmes will host the town hall meeting to hear input from residents of all backgrounds and opinions, while also welcoming state Sen. Heather Steans, a leader in the cannabis legalization effort. For more information or to RSVP, please contact Kifowit’s constituent service office at 630-585-1308 or RSVP@ILDistrict84.com.
“This is a topic that will be getting a lot of attention in the coming weeks, so I want to make sure local residents have the opportunity to have their voices heard,” said Kifowit. “I encourage both proponents and opponents of legalization to come to my event on Saturday to share their thoughts about the different approaches that are being considered in Springfield.”
“I still have a lot of questions about legalization myself, as do many of my constituents,” said Holmes. “This meeting offers us all a chance to learn more about the idea and get informed answers to help people consider the matter.”
