SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – To address the ongoing gun violence that continues to devastate communities across the country, state Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is sponsoring legislation to ban military-style assault weapons and high capacity ammunition modifications.
“It is unacceptable that gun violence throughout our country continues to reach unprecedented levels,” Moylan said. “Just recently, our neighbors in Aurora were the victims of unfathomable terror because of gun violence. To address this, I’m sponsoring a bill to that would make it illegal to own and sell assault weapons.”
Moylan’s House Bill 2878 would prohibit the purchase, sale and possession of military-style assault weapons in Illinois. The measure would also make it unlawful to retrofit weapons with high performance attachments that increase the rate of fire. However, the bill stipulates that military personnel, law enforcement, peace officers and other specified professionals would not be impacted by the ban.
“We have got to get a grip on reckless gun violence that continues to devastate our communities,” Moylan said. “With this long-overdue, commonsense bill, we are taking a stand and sending a message that this sort of violence will not be tolerated.”
