ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – State Rep. Mike Halpin, D-Rock Island, visited students at Rock Island Academy to discuss the role that reading plays in learning and to share stories with Mrs. Reeves’ kindergarten class.
“Studies show that children who are motivated to read do better in school, as reading plays a critical role in developing their minds and setting them up for lifelong success,” said Halpin. “I’m hoping my visit provided an example of how reading is both important and fun, and that an emphasis on literacy is something that will continue throughout the rest of the school year and beyond.”
Halpin visited Rock Island Academy on Monday to kick off Read Across America Week, during which reading is both celebrated and encouraged, and Dr. Seuss’ March 2 birthday is observed to increase awareness about his famous works and the joy of reading.
