“Our veterans deserve the utmost respect for their service,” Moylan said. “This bill makes clear how committed the state of Illinois is to appreciating veterans as they return to civil life. By providing a tax holiday on groceries and medications, we allow them to keep more money in their pocket to support themselves and their families.”
Moylan’s House Bill 2873 would create an annual tax holiday for veterans in November during the week of Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The holiday would exempt sales taxes on all groceries and medication, both prescription and over-the-counter. All other items would be taxed at a rate of 5 percent during that same period. Moylan, a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, has previously backed a variety of measures concerning veterans, including the creation of a veterans suicide task force and a program educating returning veterans on information regarding service animals.
“It is important that veterans know they have an ally in the General Assembly,” Moylan said. “A tax holiday sends the signal that veterans are important and their service is not forgotten. We must continue to support our veterans in every way possible.”
