“The frankness of Governor Pritzker’s address today was refreshing. He didn’t minimize the problems facing the state that were decades in the making, or the strength that’s going to be required to dig out of the hole the last four years of ideological gridlock made even deeper. Governor Pritzker will not shortchange the needs of Illinois families, and is willing to work together with the legislature to pass a balanced budget that moves Illinois forward while providing the services we need.
“We cannot attract business to Illinois without top-notch colleges and universities, but our former governor decimated those schools by playing partisan games and refusing to compromise where it was not only necessary, but critical. We must pass a budget that protects the services that many Illinois residents rely on, such as Meals on Wheels and domestic violence shelters. We also must invest in early childhood education because that money results in extraordinary savings down the road through more opportunity and less problems for those children.
“I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do what is best for our constituents, ensuring we pass a budget that puts Illinois on a good financial footing while also protecting funding for critical services that our most vulnerable citizens depend on.”
