NORTHLAKE, Ill. – State Rep. Kathy Willis, D-Northlake, issued the following statement after her gun dealer licensing legislation (Senate Bill 337) was signed into law by Governor Pritzker:
“While the National Rifle Association rejects commonsense gun reforms that would save lives, our communities can’t afford to wait any longer. Today marks an important first step in stemming the gun violence that has destroyed countless families in Illinois and throughout the nation.
“This bipartisan law will not harm any gun dealer that operates in good faith, but it does ensure accountability for dealers that fail to make efforts to keep guns from falling into the hands of criminals. I would like to thank my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and Governor Pritzker for their support on this important measure.
“While this law moves us in the right direction, there is still work to be done. We need to continue our work to keep dangerous firearms off our streets, fully fund mental health services and provide resources for after-school programs—especially for at-risk youth.
“I look forward to continuing our bipartisan efforts to help reduce gun violence and heal our communities.”
