SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Lamont Robinson, D-Chicago, took the oath of office and was sworn in as the state representative of the 5th District on Wednesday, pledging to speak up for local residents and push for local economic development, a fairer tax system and safe streets.

“I am incredibly honored to have the opportunity to serve our community as state representative,” Robinson said. “I will always stand up for the needs of our community and be your advocate in Springfield. I look forward to meeting as many of my constituents as possible over the coming weeks and months to discuss the major issues we face and tell my Springfield colleagues exactly what our community expects.”

Robinson, a small business owner, spent years building his insurance business in the 5th District. In addition to working with local leaders to bring more businesses to the area, Robinson serves as a mentor for young men through a local mentoring program he started. This background will inform Robinson’s new legislative agenda, which includes making the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share of state revenue, building safer communities, funding quality schools and creating jobs in the community.

“My focus is to support policies, such as the progressive income tax, legalizing marijuana and investing in our neighborhoods and our schools,” said Robinson. “By bringing good, high-paying jobs to our community and making sure our children have access to be the best education possible, we can help make our neighborhoods safer. I am excited to get started and I look forward to working with everyone in the 5th District.”
